Thomas Tuchel Switch Up The Formation, Chelsea Line Up

When the German arrived at Chelsea in 2021, he immediately used a 3-4-3 formation.

And even while the approach was immediately successful, Tuchel’s team started to lose efficiency with it last season.

Throughout the second half of the season, the Champions League winner experimented with a variety of formations.

And it might lead to a permanent change to one of his previous strategies from Borussia Dortmund and Paris Saint-Germain. Surprisingly, Tuchel used four different defenses on each side of the field while playing.

He decided to use the 4-2-4 attacking style at PSG because of the creativity of players like Kylian Mbappe and Neymar.

Raheem Sterling and Ravenha would be ideal in the front-wide areas if Tuchel succeeds in hitting all of his targets.

Then, while Armanda Broja takes care of everything on top, Kai Havertz can play a free attacking role. N’Golo Kante and Mason Mount, two speedy midfielders, will keep the ball on the ground while giving the backline the necessary support.

Ben Chilwell and Rhys James will each have the ability to run high and wide in defense, much like an offensive full-back.

Tuchel’s main choices in the middle are Nathan Ake and Matthias de Ligt.

The Dutch duo, who is quick, strong, and skillful, will be able to both set up play from behind and defend goalkeeper Edward Mendy. Chelsea has been criticized for relying too much on clean sheets during games, though.

The Blues are keen to increase their offensive threat since they have scored 23 fewer goals than the champions Manchester City, which makes it difficult for them to win games at the end, as they did against Brighton and Everton.

Romelu Lukaku’s disappointing performances left Chelsea scrambling to pick up the pieces, featuring guys out of place in false nine roles, and they paid the price for not having an effective goal scorer up top.

Because Jorginho and N’Golo Kante, two midfielders with higher defensive instincts, are sacrificed in the three-at-the-back system, chances are less likely to be created.

However, Tuchel may always choose to utilize the 4-3-3 formation he employed at Dortmund if he believes the Premier League is not a good fit for such a flexible structure.

With essentially the same team, one change may swap out a striker for a second midfielder.

The ideal person to stand at Mount’s side while Kante gets up from a deeper position would be Conor Gallagher.

The finest outcomes from a number of stars might occur from a configuration modification.

Then Havertz may function as a False Nine, presenting chances for the Sterling and Ravenna attackers.

The full-back can also take up higher positions along the sidelines with Kante playing as the No. 6 in front of De Ligt and Ake.

Because of the depth of the Chelsea team, Tuchel will have a wide range of possibilities.

Although all three of the top forwards—Timo Werner, Christian Pulisic, and Hakim Ziyech—face an uncertain future, the formation change might finally enable them to shine.

Cesar Azpilicueta, a favorite of Tuchel’s, may continue playing despite Barcelona’s desire, while Billy Gilmore, who recently extended his contract, may be given another shot.

With Malang Sarr, Kenedy, Ruben Loftus-Cheek, and Ross Barkley on the roster, Tuchel has the opportunity to further integrate himself into the group if he so chooses.

Chelsea’s back three, which is dynamic and adaptable, has become a defining feature of the Premier League over the past six seasons.

Antonio Conte and Thomas Tuchel have used the system in four distinct campaigns during which the Blues have established themselves as a challenging opponent.

Chelsea has achieved this, with the system playing a crucial role in their fortitude and offensive danger. The Blues, who set a new defensive record in the Champions League in 2020–2021 by allowing only four goals, went on to allow an incredible 33 goals when they finished third in the 2018–19 Premier League season.
