Christopher Alan Nkunku, a French professional football player for RB Leipzig of the Bundesliga and the France national team, was born on November 14, 1997. He plays as a forward or midfielder.
Nkunku joined the German team, RB Leipzig, in July 2019 and played there for the 2021–22 season, winning the DFB-Pokal and the Bundesliga Player of the Season awards.
Christopher Nkunku Stays With Leipzig
Nkunku made his professional debut for the team in December 2015 after graduating from the Paris Saint-Germain Academy. He played 78 times for them and captured three Ligue 1 championships, twice the Coupe de France and once the Coupe de la Ligue.
Before making his senior national team debut in March 2022, Nkunku competed for France at several youth international levels. The 24-year-old was in excellent form last season, scoring 35 goals in 50 games across all competitions, including 20 in the Bundesliga, and adding 19 assists.
His exploits won him a spot on the France team last March, and his former club Paris Saint-Germain and Manchester United both expressed interest.
Nkunku’s original contract had two years left on it, but the managing director of RB Leipzig Oliver Mintzlaff has extended it by another four.
Red Bull-sponsored Leipzig won the German Cup last year, a first for the club, which was only established in 2009 but rocketed up through Germany’s football pyramid with four promotions in seven years, starting from the fifth division.
They have once more qualified for the Champions League, and Nkunku stated that the club has lofty objectives.
He remarked, “RB Leipzig have established themselves on the world stage recently and have demonstrated we can contend for titles.
Importantly, it contains a £51.5 million release clause, which would be of interest to a number of Premier League clubs.
Last season, Nkunku had a fantastic year, scoring 20 goals and assisting 13 more for his teammates.
Manchester United and Chelsea were frequently mentioned as potential suitors for the player as a result, but now that he has signed a new contract, it appears they will have to wait.
Nkunku expressed his happiness at continuing to wear the RB Leipzig jersey in an interview with the club’s official website following the signing of a new deal.
Despite interest from Chelsea, Manchester United, and PSG, Leipzig CEO Oliver Mintzlaff has consistently reaffirmed that the Frenchman, who is under contract with the Bundesliga club through 2024, won’t be departing this summer.
Mintzlaff recently traveled to London, according to Sport Bild, to meet with Pini Zahavi, the agent for Nkunku.
The new contract for Nkunku will be renewed for an additional year and come with a wage raise as well as an early termination clause that will take effect in 2023.
According to the report, this is more than €60m, a considerable increase above the €13m that RB Leipzig shelled out for Nkunku in 2019. Naby Keita to Liverpool in 2018 for €60 million represented Leipzig’s previous record selling.
One of the more recent young players to catch the eye of numerous European clubs, including English powerhouse Manchester United, is French midfielder Christopher Nkunku.
He was widely favored to transfer to England from German powerhouses RB Leipzig and was also on the radar of a few other English clubs.
Nkunku has, however, signed a new contract with the Red Bulls, which has caused grief for the English Premier League (EPL) clubs and supporters. His new deal has a release clause that will go effective in the summer of 2019 and is good until 2026.
